Significance of the Primary Nutrients
Aside from temperature and daylight, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of water appeared to be most important factors regulating the biological productivity within lakes and streams. Nitrogen/phosphorus ratios of 30 to 1 and of 15 to 1 have been reported as optimal for the growth of algal blooms.
Several investigators have suggested a concentration of 0.01 mg/L of inorganic phosphorus as a maximum value permissible without the danger of supporting undesirable aquatic plant growths.
