Bromine in Water
Bromine is a dark reddish brown fuming liquid. Elemental bromine is relatively soluble in water as the bromide ion, Br-. Sometimes it is present in significant concentrations in brines. Bromine is released into the environment when bromine compounds are used as fumigants and may reach levels toxic to plants. Bromine is an antiseptic and a disinfectant, therefore it may interfere with the bacteria and other natural water purification processes. Very little aquatic information on bromine exists.
